The Consolation Game..
It ended up being what might be the funniest, most wonderful game of any tournament. Overton was missing players, down to 7 in fact. So Cumberland played fairly 7 v 7. At the half after the coaches joked they decided to throw all the chips in and actually played. Coaches David Ridings, Jeremy Conner, Chris Crannigan and a few other jokers made their way onto the field for a hey day. It was ridiculous fun. There was no real final aside from the forfeit. The players and coaches, and refs enjoyed the whole afternoon immeasurably.
Then came the event.
Algood vs Avery Trace
An event indeed. A little rain came down and created a bit of fun for both teams and after many exciting goals (7 in all!) Avery Trace notched the championship victory 4-3. The efforts put forth by both teams in this match was admirable and even enviable.
This was brought to a close by the trophy presentation. Which officially ended the season.
Some fun facts: The games in the tournament we the closest we have seen in years. And the distance between 1st and 3rd was so close that it took a fourth tie breaker to decide it! This has been the closest and possibly best UCSC season ever, depending on your point of view. So to everyone involved, coaches, players, parents, fans, and refs we wish to thank you all for all the work and time you have offered.
